Explore Guilin and Yangshuo away from the tourist traps on our food-forward 4-day trip through China’s most famous landscape. From eating all of the best (and unique) local dishes to exploring the countryside in vintage sidecars to boutique poolside views, get ready for a delicious adventure like no other!

The landscape around Guilin is surrounded by jagged limestone karsts that endlessly fill the horizon in every direction. Rivers zig-zag around these karsts to create one of China’s most classic scenes that has been celebrated in countless paintings, the 20 Yuan bank note, and as a backdrop in a Star Wars movie.

Known for being both spicy and sour, Guilin’s cuisine is a combination of Cantonese, Hunanese, and local minority. On menus, you’ll find local staples like taro, snails, fresh fish, bamboo, and tropical fruits. Ingredients are often pickled in every manner, and even the local chili sauce includes a hefty dollop of fermented soybean.

Boutique*: Boutique guesthouses and hotels that offer comfort and modern amenities while exemplifying local architecture and culture at a great price. All meals are included on this food focused tour

    • Guilin Evening Food Tour: The perfect way to kick-off our trip is on a food tour through central Guilin! We’ll visit a variety of restaurants and street food stalls to get a legit introduction to Guangxi’s delicious cuisine – from pickles (a local specialty) to bbq to dessert.

Driving: Approx. 30 mins from the airport to the city center.

Hotel: 4-star hotel located along the river in central Guilin.

  • Day 2: Guilin > Yangshuo

    • We’ll depart Guilin and head towards Yangshuo, exploring the countryside along the way. Snack your way through a legit local market with all kinds of treats you’ve never seen before. You’re not on the east coast anymore!

    • Enjoy lunch hidden in a local village outside Yangshuo with sweeping river views. Try local fish, free-range stewed chicken, fried duck eggs and a lot more.

    • Beneath the karst cliffs are a network of caves hidden in the jungle. We’ll meet a local expert who will show us one of the area’s wildest caves to explore the stalactites & stalagmites, and squeeze through the narrow passageways of the underground. Get ready for a true adventure!

    • Soak in the poolside views of our lush boutique guesthouse nestled between the karst hills of Yangshuo’s countryside.

    • Dinner at a private kitchen in the small village where we’re staying for the night. Try egg-wrapped dumplings, braised pork belly, seasonal veggies, pickled bamboo with beef, and a lot more.

Driving: About 2 hours from Guilin to Yangshuo plus some short drives.

Hotel: A beautiful boutique guesthouse nestled deep inside the karst hills of Yangshuo.

  • Day 3: Yangshuo

    • We’ll head into Yangshuo’s famous West Street and grab lunch at a trending spot with excellent river views. We’ll try BBQ fish, roasted osmanthus chicken, duck stewed with local beer, and BBQ beef with mint.

    • Get some time to explore West Street’s shops and cafes, or head back to the hotel and relax.

    • In the evening, we’ll arrive at our local cooking studio located in another small village in Yangshuo. Each person will make 3 local dishes that you’ll enjoy for dinner.

    • After dinner, you’ll have some free time to check out Yangshuo’s pubs, enjoy one of Yangshuo’s famous shows, or head back to your hotel to relax.

Driving: 3 hours on a vintage sidecar, plus short drives around Yangshuo.

Hotel: A beautiful boutique guesthouse nestled deep inside the karst hills of Yangshuo (same as previous night).

  • Yangshuo

    • No trip to Yangshuo is complete without a float down the river. So we’ll hop on bamboo rafts and enjoy the scenery from the water on a 40 minute float. Careful, your feet may get wet!

    • Another great meal is waiting for us in a small village with local, home-style cooking. Taro (the local staple food), local river shrimp, wild seasonal veggies, snails stuffed with pork, homemade cured meat, and a lot more are on the menu.

    • On our way back to Guilin, we’ll stop at a breathtaking platform for one final view of this unworldly landscape.
